Beyond the Breakers by Libby Hathorn

To bob out there

Beyond the breakers

Like a seal

Like a whale,

Bob up then go down

Like a fish thing

With unblinking eyes

to the cold swerving

mystery depths,

Lunge upwards

hair streaming,

for the throat of sea,

Burst onto an airy

glittery surface

And float and float

free as weed

beyond the breakers

dreaming sea things,

outstretched, almost still,

on a giant aquatic bed

with the warm sheet

of sun pulled right over.

The only one,

free as weed,

rocked to gentleness

In that old sea place

way out there, beyond…
